Esculin is a coumarin compound extracted from the dried bark or twigs of the *Fraxinus chinensis* tree (family Oleaceae). It is the active ingredient in the traditional Chinese medicine *Fraxinus chinensis* bark. At room temperature, it is a white crystalline powder with a slightly bitter odor. It is soluble in hot alcohol, methanol, pyridine, ethyl acetate, and acetic acid (hydrate).

Esculin possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticoagulant, and analgesic activities, and exhibits a significant diuretic effect in mice. It can inhibit aldose reductase in the rat lens, is a growth inhibitor of Bacillus subtilis, and also has inhibitory effects on chemically induced carcinogenesis. It is used for content determination/identification/pharmacological experiments, etc.
