Basic Information

Oleanolic acid (CAS 508-02-1) is widely found in plants, typically in concentrations ranging from 0.2% to 2%. The content of oleanolic acid in the Cucurbitaceae plant Luogudi is relatively high, ranging from 1.5% to 2%, while in the fruit of Ligustrum lucidum, it is approximately 0.6% to 0.7%. Oleanolic acid is a white, needle-shaped crystal that is odorless and tasteless. It is unstable in both acids and alkalis. Its melting point ranges from 308°C to 310°C, and its optical rotation is [α]₂₀D +73.3° (c=0.15, chloroform). It is insoluble in water but soluble in methanol, ethanol, ether, acetone, and chloroform.

Oleanolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound isolated and extracted from the whole herb of Swertia serrata or the fruit of Ligustrum lucidum. It exists in various plants in both free form and as glycosides, and has become a commonly used liver-protecting drug in clinical practice.

1.Oleanolic acid has anti-inflammatory, sedative, cardiotonic, diuretic, lipid-lowering, blood sugar-lowering, liver-protecting, enzyme-lowering, immune-enhancing, and S180 tumor cell growth-inhibiting effects. It is an active ingredient for the development of drugs for treating liver diseases and reducing blood sugar.

2.Oleanolic acid has a protective effect against chromosome damage and a preventive effect on experimental atherosclerosis. Clinically, it is used to treat infectious acute icteric hepatitis and chronic viral hepatitis, with significant effects in lowering alanine aminotransferase levels and reducing jaundice.

3.Oleanolic acid inhibits liver fibrosis. In rats with liver fibrosis treated with oleanolic acid, the severity of fibrosis and liver collagen content were significantly reduced, indicating its potential in the prevention and treatment of liver cirrhosis.
