Linoleic acid is a fatty acid, scientifically known as cis-9,12-octadecadienoic acid. Along with other fatty acids, linoleic acid exists in animal and vegetable oils in the form of glycerides, and is a major component of drying and semi-drying oils such as linseed oil and cottonseed oil, which are composed of glycerides. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid for human and animal nutrition.
