6-Benzylaminopurine is a white crystalline solid, sparingly soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and stable in acids and bases. It was the first artificially synthesized cytokinin.

6-Benzylaminopurine (6BA) can be used for vegetable preservation. In tissue culture, cytokinins are essential supplementary hormones in differentiation media. 6-BA cytokinins are also used in fruit trees and vegetables, primarily to promote cell expansion, increase fruit set, and delay leaf senescence. Cytokinins can induce cell division in shoot tips, root tips, immature seeds, germinating seeds, and growing fruits.
