Indole-3-butyric acid, with the molecular formula C11H12O2N and a molecular weight of 190.22, is a white crystalline solid in its pure form with a melting point of 124–125°C. The industrial product is a white to pale yellow crystalline solid with a melting point of 121–124°C. It has a characteristic odor and is toxic and irritating; its vapor pressure at 60°C is <10 μPa. It is sparingly soluble in water, with a solubility of 0.25 g/L at 20°C. It is readily soluble in benzene and soluble in other organic solvents, with solubility (g/100 ml) as follows: benzene >100; acetone, ethanol, and ether 3–10; chloroform 1–10. Indole-3-butyric acid has low toxicity to humans and animals, is stable to acids, and forms salts in solutions of alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates.

Indole-3-butyric acid is a broad-spectrum indole plant growth regulator and an excellent rooting agent, promoting rooting in cuttings of herbaceous and woody ornamental plants. It can also be used to improve fruit set in melons and fruits, increasing the fruit set rate.

Storage conditions: 18~25°C, protected from light and moisture, sealed and dry.
