Introduction: Phenol Red is a deep red crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 354.38. It is soluble in water, alcohol, and acetone, but practically insoluble in ether and chloroform. It dissolves in alkaline hydroxide or alkaline carbonate solutions, turning a deep red color, and is stable in air.
Applications: Phenol Red is an acid-base indicator with a color change range of pH 6.8 (yellow) to 8.4 (red). It is used in the determination of total carbon dioxide in blood and as an indicator in the preparation of disaccharide iron-urea culture media for bacterial serological testing. Its sodium salt is used to determine liver function. It is also used in biochemical research.
