Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA, molecular formula: CF3COOH) is a colorless, volatile, fuming liquid with an odor similar to acetic acid, exhibiting hygroscopic and pungent smell. Due to the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, it possesses strong acidity, being 100,000 times stronger than acetic acid. Its melting point is -15.2℃, boiling point is 72.4℃, and density is 1.5351 g/cm³ (1℃). It is miscible with water, fluorinated hydrocarbons, methanol, ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and hexane. It can partially dissolve carbon disulfide and alkanes with six or more carbon atoms, making it an excellent solvent for proteins and polyesters.
Application
Trifluoroacetic acid, as a fine intermediate, is mainly used in the synthesis of fluorine-containing pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes, and can also be used as a raw material in glass coating processes. It is a catalyst for esterification and condensation reactions; a protecting agent for hydroxyl and amino groups, and is used in the synthesis of sugars and peptides.
