It is a white to pale yellow crystalline powder with a boiling point of 267 °C. It is insoluble in water and ether, and soluble in ethanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, and inorganic acids. 8-Hydroxyquinoline is classified as a Group 3 carcinogen. The oral LD50 in rats is 1200 mg/kg, and it exhibits acute toxicity to aquatic organisms.

8-Hydroxyquinoline is used as a reagent for determining bismuth, magnesium, copper, zinc, and organic nitrogen. It is also used as a pharmaceutical intermediate, a raw material for the synthesis of chlorpheniramine and clopidogrel, an intermediate in dyes and pesticides, and an extractant.
