4-Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) is a white solid, soluble in most organic solvents, such as methanol, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, and ethyl acetate, and slightly soluble in water. It is available from both domestic and international reagent companies. This reagent is relatively stable and can be stored at room temperature. It is irritating and corrosive to the skin. In the laboratory, it is prepared by heating 4-substituted (Cl, OPh, SO3H, OSiMe3)pyridine with dimethylamine.
