Introduction: Potassium bromate is a white rhombic crystal or crystalline powder. Molecular weight: 167.00. Melting point: 350℃ (decomposition releases oxygen). Relative density: 3.27 (17.5/4℃). Stable at room temperature, it decomposes at 434℃, releasing oxygen to form potassium bromide. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in acetone. Aqueous solution is neutral. When its solid is mixed with organic matter or sulfides and ground, it can cause a violent explosion. Toxic. It melts and decomposes into potassium bromide and oxygen at 434℃. It has strong oxidizing properties; dry potassium bromate can cause certain organic substances (such as alcohol, certain oils, etc.) to burn.

 

Applications: Potassium bromate is used as a improver for flour and fish products. It is also used as a reagent and oxidizing agent. Bromate is more toxic than chlorate, mainly causing methemoglobinemia; ingestion of 10-15g of KBrO3 is dangerous to humans. Adding it during bread making can improve bread quality, but it also transforms into bromide. It has been proven to be carcinogenic to the kidneys of rats. Chinese food standards stipulate that the maximum usage in bread and biscuits is 0.05 g/kg.
